AI agents promise to move beyond answering questions and start completing work. The useful distinction is not whether a tool calls itself an “agent”, but whether it can reliably carry a task across several steps while preserving context and asking for approval at the right moment.
Start with bounded, reversible work
Small teams should begin with processes where inputs are clear, mistakes are visible and actions can be reversed. Meeting summaries, lead qualification drafts and weekly reporting are better starting points than payments, contracts or unsupervised customer communication.
The best first workflow has three properties:
- It happens often enough to matter.
- A human can quickly judge the result.
- Failure creates inconvenience, not irreversible damage.
Automation should return control
A good system does not hide decisions. It shows what it used, what it changed and what still needs a person. The goal is not removing people from work; it is removing avoidable repetition from people’s work.
What to do this week
Choose one repeated task, document its current steps and measure how long it takes. Automate only the preparation stage first. Keep approval human until the output is consistently trustworthy.
